Syrian Refugees Take Shelter in Makeshift Camps

flood relief

BULGARIA – Hundreds of Syrian families are living in crowded and unsanitary conditions with little hope of improvement.

Thousands of people fleeing their homes as a result of the fighting in Syria are seeking shelter across the border. Many of these refugees are trying to reach relatives living in European countries by way of nations like Bulgaria. However, once entering Bulgaria many don’t have the necessary papers to continue on.

Unprepared for the influx of refugees, the Bulgarian government hastily prepared housing for them in several unused buildings, but a makeshift camp in one abandoned school building lacks proper plumbing and families must sleep on floor mats in crowded rooms.

CBN’s Operation Blessing and partner organizations are working to improve living standards in the camp, providing beds, clothing and other necessities. Now, there are individual rooms for families, cooking facilities, washrooms and even classrooms for the children, with additional camps being added to prevent overcrowding.
